• INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL CHANGE

In an unbelievably short span, unplanned and almost mindlessly, our species has become by far the largest factor for change on the planet. As a consequence, we are facing a situation that involves the collapse of any balance between our species and the rest of life on earth.

• EVIDENCE FOR CLIMATIC CHANGE IN LAYERS OF GLACIAL ICE
  Dr. Paterson will describe the study of ice cores from glaciers and how the ice preserves evidence of events such as the eruption of Krakatoa and the onset of the Industrial Revolution. These are only two of many incidents in the history of the Earth which have had a major effect on its climate.
  Dr. Stan Paterson has studied glaciers in the Rocky Mountains and icecaps in Canada's Artic. He is now retired from the former Earth Physics Branch of the Federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, where his areas of research included how glaciers move and the record of past climate contained in icecaps.
  
• EVIDENCE FOR CLIMATIC VARIABILITY IN TREE RINGS AND ITS REFLECTION OF CLIMATIC CHANGE
  Climate affects tree growth directly through the crown and the root system. Although the growth history of a tree is recorded in its rings, it is extremely difficult to isolate ring patterns produced by past hot/cold or wet/dry conditions since non-climatic factors (such as tree age, competition, etc.) also affect tree growth.
  L. (Les) A. Jozsa from 1979 to present has held a position as a Wood Resource Scientist at Forintek Canada Corp. His work includes planning, coordinating and conducting research on wood quality studies involving particularly the use of x-ray densitometry. This includes studies of silvicultural treatment and climatic effects on wood productions and basic wood quality.
  
• GLOBAL CLIMATOLOGY - INTERACTION OF CLIMATE OCEAN AND LAND
  The greenhouse effect, which has natually lead to the possibility of life on this planet, is being augmented by carbon dioxide and other emissions to the atmosphere. The direct effect is to increase the radiative heating in the atmosphere. The coupled climate system has a number of complex feedback processes, some positive, some negative, that are likely to amplify this radiative heating and cause significant global warming over the next century. The oceans will play a major role in determining both the magnitude and timing of the warming. These topics will be described in the presentation.
  Professor Gordon McBean is Chairman of the Atmospheric Science Program of the Departments of Geography and Oceanography at the University of British Columbia.
